Blue Earth County Informs the Public of Passport Processing Time

The US Department of State has announced that current passport processing time is about 18 weeks to receive a passport. All initial applications and renewal applications are sent to the US Department of State for processing. Initial applications are reviewed and mailed by the Blue Earth County Property and Environmental Resources office. Renewal applications can also be reviewed but are mailed by the applicant.

The US Department of State is indicating that the National Passport Center is experiencing significant delays in issuance. Delays with mail service are impacting when the passport applications are received for processing at their facilities. Regular applications can take up to 18 weeks from the day the application is submitted to the day a new passport is received. It is important to note the processing timeframes for the US Department of State begin the day they receive the application, not the day it is mailed. The projected 18-week timeframe includes up to 12 weeks for processing and up to 6 weeks for mail time. Expedited service is available for an extra fee and can reduce the timeframe to 12 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received.

The public is urged to plan accordingly should their passport be nearing expiration or when making travel plans.
