Drainage update 1/7/2019

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

 No upcoming meetings or hearings.

Project Updates:

  • JD09 (Le Ray Twp.)  With the new tile install complete, I don’t expect to see any contractors back out on this project until next Spring.  There is a small checklist of items to complete, but other than that, things are looking good for this improvement project.
  • CD48 (Cambria Twp.)   This improvement project has been quiet since before Christmas.  I don’t have any definite reports of when the contractor will start back up installing tile yet this winter.  I know that when the contractor quit a couple weeks ago, that the frost was getting pretty tough to work with.  Yes, we have had some nice warm weather lately, but will it be enough for the contractor to start back up?  We will see how things go and keep everyone updated.
  • JD34 (Le Ray Twp.)  Nothing new to report on this project from last week.
  • CD56 Branch 18 (Lincoln Twp.)  Work is completed and things seem to be working great.  We will have to touch-up the two road crossings along the township road, but all-in-all this repair project went smoothly.  This will be a huge change to the farmability of this area of the repair.

Drainage Minutes:

This time of year, as to be expected, is a quieter time for drainage and drainage-related topics.  I’m not saying that we are not working on repairs or projects, but in general things have slowed down.

So far, we have had a pretty mild winter, compared to what we have seen in the past.  In most winters, we Minnesotans are looking for things to do, to get out of the house. The mild weather lately is helping to keep lots of Minnesotans outside, despite the calendar.

We don’t have the greatest ice conditions on all of our area lakes, but the nice weather allowed people to get out over the weekend to enjoy the fishing.  Depending on who you talk to, overall the fishing has been pretty good lately.  For our snowmobiling enthusiasts, southern Minnesota is currently disappointing.  Head north a few hours and you’ll find favorable riding conditions with areas well over 12 inches of snow.

I’m sure that the mild temperatures and the lack of snow in southern Minnesota will only be temporary.  With temps in the 40’s, it’s easy to forget just how much more of winter we do have yet to come.

Looking to get out and enjoy some events coming up?  MN AG Expo is coming on January 23 and 24 at Mankato.  Please click on link for more information and to pre-register,

I know of a few fishing contests coming up soon in our area.  January 26th is the Lake Crystal Ice Fishing Extravaganza.  First weekend in February Madison Lake will host the Mad Bobber Ice Fishing Contest.  Along with the fishing contest, there is also an ATV raffle contest going on.  The proceeds from the ATV raffle, as well as the Lake Crystal Ice Fishing contest, will go to benefit the Lake Crystal Watershed, which includes Crystal and Loon Lakes.

Local groups for the Lake Crystal Watershed include Crystal Waters Project and Crystal Loon-Lake Recreation.  These groups are active year-round in their efforts to clean up their area water bodies.  Do what you can to come out and support our local clean water groups.  Please see fliers below about upcoming events and also click Mad Bobber logo for a link to the Mad Bobber Fishing Contest.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of December 24 – December 28:

  • CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)  I was called out to make inspections on a possible slough area and possible beaver dam.  The slough area is actually an old concrete tile outlet that has collapsed.  The beaver dam will require the hiring of a trapper before we go and remove the dam.  Our trapper is supposed to start yet this week, January 7.
  • CD48 (Cambria Twp.)  Pretty quiet with the improvement project in the last few weeks.
  • JD48 (Butternut Valley Twp.)  Monitoring a possible beaver issue under a driveway culvert.  We have notified a trapper to deal with the active beaver or beavers.  We will remove debris and clean-up things in the open ditch after our trapper has finished his work.

Special note:  I will be out of the office next Monday, January 14, so no drainage blog next week.  The drainage blog will return on Monday, January 21, with some great photos to share.  Have a great week and enjoy the nice weather while it lasts.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
