Drainage update 9/4/2018

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

  • CD56 Branch 18 (Lincoln Twp.)  We received a winning bid for two tile branches to be replaced.  This official awarding will be part of the September 11 Board of Commissioners meeting.
  • CD28 (Lincoln Twp.)  We are hosting a repair petition hearing on September 11 as part of the Blue Earth County Board of Commissioners meeting.  Affected landowners should have received notice by mail.  Meeting will be held on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse.  Please call or email for additional details if needed.

Project Updates:

  • JD09 (Le Ray Twp.)  After the rains over the holiday weekend, things are at a stand-still.  The project site itself received a reported 2.5 inches of rain on Monday, September 3.  Below are a couple of updated photos of a newly installed crossing along open ditch.jd09 new crossing 2jd09 new crossing
  • CD48 (Cambria Twp.)   This improvement project is still set to start later this year.
  • CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)  This will be a fairly good-sized repair involving large 60-inch pipe being installed to help stabilize sloughing issues.  This project should start very soon as the deadline is before harvest.
  • CD56 (Lincoln Twp.)  Additional cleaning and checklist items are being completed by the contractor.  We are adding some areas of additional riprap rock to tile outlets along the open ditch.  There are a few tile outlets that need to be repaired also.  It shouldn’t take the contractor to long to make the needed fixes, pending it stays dry.

Drainage Minutes:

Hope everyone enjoyed the extended Labor Day weekend.  I can speak for myself in saying that it was a hot and humid weekend to be working outside.  If the humidity wasn’t pleasant enough, local rainfalls of 4 – 7 inches poured over the Mankato area on Monday, September 3.  I know rainfall totals vary greatly in just a couple miles' distance, but in my personal rain gauge at home I had over 4.50 inches from yesterday.  Things don’t sound promising for today, as we are expecting yet another 2 – 4 inches of rain.  Hopefully we get missed by today's storms and we can start to dry out again.  Check out the lead-in photo of my rain gauge.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of August 20 – August 24:

  • CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)  Monitoring our on-going issue with sloughing and the township road.
  • CD86 (Beauford Twp.)  So far, the beavers haven’t rebuilt any of the dams in the open ditch.  Our contractor has four (of the nine) new alternative side intakes installed.
  • JD48 (Butternut Valley Twp.)  We have both mowed and sprayed for weeds on a portion of this system, and will have to monitor for results.  If this two-part plan seems to work, I’d like to use it on all open ditch systems going forward.
  • CD56 (Garden City & Lincoln Twps) Final checklist items are being completed by the main contractor.  Sub-contractors have been busy mowing the buffer area and we will also be spraying the buffer/open ditch area for weeds.
  • CD27 (Lincoln Twp.)  We are planning on doing an open ditch cleaning for a deep portion of this system located along MN Highway 60 yet this year.  We have been working with an engineer and a contractor to devise a plan on how to go about getting this done on a very deep section of ditch that most long-reach excavators can’t even come close to reaching.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
