Drainage update 8/6/2018

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

  • CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)      We will be having a landowner meeting to discuss and update landowners of improvement options and some possible costs associated with these options.  Affected landowners will be notified by a mailing.  The mailing will include all details of location and time.  We do have a major repair for this drainage system that is currently open for public bidding until Friday, August 10 at 2 pm.
  • JD09 (LeRay Twp.)  We will be discussing a change order for this improvement project.  The change order is including a small 500-foot branch that wasn’t originally included in the improvement.

Project Updates:

  • JD34 (Le Ray Twp.)  With the new tile all installed things have been pretty quiet.  The contractor should be coming back soon to finish the clean-up work that is left to do.  No certain date is set as of yet for this to happen.
  • JD09 (Le Ray Twp.)  The southerly portion of this two-part improvement is going great.  Crews have been taking advantage of the nice weather lately.  The new pond area which is going to be installed on the north side of County Road 17 should start soon, possibly yet this week.  The other contractor for the northerly petition should be starting this week, as I’m told, but we will see what the weather brings and how much of the pond is done.  The northerly part of this improvement is all new tile that empties into this new pond.

Drainage minutes:

Things where actually quite busy last week.  We had multiple landowner meetings and multiple projects going on at the same time.  We are going into the second half of the year busier than what we started the year out at.  We will have multiple improvement projects going on and multiple large-scale repairs going on all at the same time.

We have received a petition for improvement for next year already, with two more possible to come yet this year.  All of those would start next year at earliest.  As our tile systems in much of the county are approaching 80 to 100 years old, I don’t think there will be any shortage of improvements and major repairs.

There is a Drainage Water Management Demonstration field day coming up next week, Thursday, August 16 in Lamberton, Minnesota.  This field day is put on by the University of Minnesota with support from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.  I hope to be able to attend this.  This would be my first time attending, but looks to be a full day of learning and discovering.  They will be demonstrating some of the new and innovative things that are being tried and used in the agricultural industry.  Lamberton is a long drive, but I’m sure the learning experience will be worth the time.  This is a free event and lunch is provided.  For more details on this event click the link.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of July 30 – August 3:

·         CD28 (Lincoln Twp.)  After our landowner meeting last week, it was decided to do repair option 2, which was more of a fix of some issues that absolutely needed attention.

·         CD56 Branch 18 (Lincoln Twp.)  We held a landowner meeting last week, and it was decided and agreed by the landowners to go ahead with our plans to replace this area of tile.  Much of this area of tile has no drainage at all or very minimal drainage.  This project should be going out for public bid very soon and we should be able to do this project hopefully yet this fall or late summer.

·         CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)  We have a repair public bid currently open until this Friday, August 10.  We will be making a major repair to a 200-foot area of the open ditch that is compromising the safety of the neighboring township road.

·         CD86 (Beauford Twp.)  We are currently getting ready to install nine or more ASI's.  ASI stands for Alternative Side Intake.  These types of intakes are geared more towards clean water practices and water quality.  This is part of a clean water grant that we were awarded.  We are very excited about this project, as it will be yet another drainage system with multiple water quality intakes installed.  We did a bunch last year as part of the CD56 clean out and repair work in Garden City Township near Lake Crystal.

·         JD28 (Decoria Twp.)  We have a MnDot (Minnesota Department of Transportation) project going on with MN highway 22 south.  We have a county tile system that crosses one of these intersections that we are trying to figure out how to properly hook up new and old tile.  We learned once again that our old tile maps aren’t always survey accurate.

·         JD07 (Lincoln Twp.)  Things look very nice; all re-grading and seeding is done for where we had to install about 160 feet of new pipe near the beginning of the open ditch portion of this system.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
