Blogger's Note:  We're publishing on Tuesday this week due to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday.

Drainage update 1/16/2018

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

CD28 (Lincoln Twp.) we will be having a final acceptance hearing on February 6, 2018 at 9:15 in the County Boardroom of Historic Courthouse (second floor).  This is to accept the work of Geislinger & Sons and the engineering for this major improvement project.

Project Updates:

  • No project updates at this time.  All projects are shut down for the winter season.  Spring will be a very busy time for drainage as we will have two, possible three, major projects going next spring.

Drainage Minutes:

Things are usually pretty quiet this time of year, especially when the extreme cold temperatures have everything frozen tight.  I have been keeping busy with meetings the last couple weeks.  Last week, we had a Minnesota Viewers Association meeting that discussed hydrology and valuing drainage on different soils.

We have had a few landowner meetings lately.  It sounds like we might be staying busy with the possibility of a couple new improvement projects for either much later this year or next.

The Minnesota Ag Expo is coming to Mankato next week.  There should be a few interesting speakers to listen to, besides checking out some of the latest and greatest gadgets from the Ag industry.  There will be a wide spectrum of vendors there, from tile contractors to precision ag software and seed companies.  Check out the link for more information.  I plan on attending to listen to two different speakers.

There is not much for new repairs coming with the frozen ground.  We still have a fair number of repairs to make from last fall.  We just hope for good spring weather to get all those repairs done ahead of planting season.  We will have three major projects starting back up in the spring, including JD34 LeRay Township, JD09 LeRay Township, and CD12 Mankato Township.  I expect the CD48 improvement project will be going out for bids fairly soon, and we may have yet another major improvement project starting this spring.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of January 8 – January 12:

  • CD35 (Mapleton Twp.)  Monitoring previous repairs from fall.
  • CD86 (Beauford Twp.)  Monitoring water levels from previous beaver damage.
  • CD97 (Lyra Twp.)  Smaller beaver dam on west side of County Road 1.  Monitoring water levels to make sure things don’t get to backed up and cause severe erosion issues.
  • Inspections are usually fairly quiet this time of year.

Please call with issues you observe on our public drainage system, as there is a lot of open ditch and tile in our county and only two of us in the drainage department.  We will do our absolute best to service your issues and concerns as we receive them.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
