Drainage update 6/26/2017

Upcoming Drainage Hearings or Meetings:

CD83 (McPherson Twp.)  We will be having a landowner meeting to discuss a possible repair project for this ditch system.  This meeting will be held on July 5th.  Location and details of times for this meeting will be in the mailer that landowners for this system will be receiving shortly.

CD76 (McPherson Twp.)  We will be having a landowner meeting to discuss a possible improvement project for this drainage system.  The meeting for this improvement will be held on July 5th.  Landowners and those affected by this system will receive more information on times and location of the meeting.

JD17 (Garden City Twp.)  We will be having a landowner meeting on Thursday, July 6.  The landowners and individuals that this meeting will affect should receive notice soon, if they haven’t already.  This meeting is a follow up to our meeting from last year and new details from our televising and exploratory digging.

Project Updates:

·         CD28 (Lincoln Twp.)  I’ve been waiting a long time to be able to say this, but the new 48 inch pipe is fully installed all the way to the open ditch.  The new pipe should get opened up today.  It shouldn’t take long to get water levels in the northerly open ditch back down.  Crews open cut Blue Earth County Road 13 last week and installed a 100 foot long steel casing pipe.  The pipe was welded together in three sections and placed in the new trench last Thursday.  The final connection between the new dual wall plastic pipe and the new steel casing pipe was made late Thursday afternoon.  The crews finished backfilling around the new steel pipe Friday and are expecting to have the new bituminous surface done Wednesday cd28 new 100ft casing pipe 3or Thursday this week.  There are still a few clean up and smaller items to finish as part of this project, but the new pipe is in and hopefully water is running moving as you read this.

·         CD86 (Beauford Twp.)  The contractor for this project pulled off site for a few weeks to tend to other commitments they previously had.  We had to get board approval for the additional tile repairs to be made and add to this repair.  There have been huge improvements from the new pipe that was installed.  Many acres that were almost non farmable last year are now dry and have crop on them.  Once the contractor is able to get back on site to finish the 700 – 800 additional feet of tile, they will be in and out within a week.

·         CD56 (Garden City Twp.)  The contractor on this project is doing a good job of moving right along.  The crew is split into different groups, one doing ditch cleaning, one doing tree and brush removal and then some installing new WASCOB’s and other erosion and clean water control structures.

·         CD12 (Mankato Twp.)  Not much has happened on this project for a while mostly because there are many new utilities being installed in the new County Road 12 right-of-way area.  Once the new culverts are installed where CD12 crosses the new County Road 12, then our contractor can come in and start cleaning the open ditch out.  There will be a lot of sediment taken out of this open ditch, as this open ditch system is overdue for a good cleaning.  Once the cleaning starts, it should move along fairly quickly, including the installation of two new culvert crossings on the north end of this system.

Drainage Minutes:

What a difference from last year at this time.  Last year we were very busy with repairs and assessing damages from our first major storm of the year that dumped 5 plus inches of rain in some areas.  Fast forward from those major storms of last year and we are still finishing up some of those major repairs from damage.  Things are still plenty busy this year with four major projects going on at the same time and two more major projects set to start in a few months.

We are still staying busy outside of our major projects with plenty of repairs, and some very large and complicated. Still, many are quick and easy.

We have three possible new improvements that may come to light.  We are having landowner meetings on two of these systems next week.  There is not a whole lot going on in the drainage news world.  Buffer deadlines are still in place and at Tuesday's County Board of Commissioners Meeting, the board will decide if the county will elect jurisdiction of enforcing the buffer law.

Recent Drainage Inspections – week of June 19 – June 23:

·         CD28 (Lincoln Twp.)  Project site drop-ins to check on progress of the project.

·         CD56 (Garden City Twp.)  I just stop by randomly three or more times a week to check on progress of current repair project and to address issues that may arise.

·         JD15 (Jamestown Twp.)  I drove by after one of our hard rain storms of last week to check on this system.  This system is in need of a major overhaul, between lots of tile, very shallow ditch, major sediment issues and no buffer areas.  Pretty jd15 flooding 2much anytime there is a heavy rainfall this system can’t handle the flush of water and it spills out of its banks quite often.  This is a system that’s on our target list for clean waters.

·         CD34 (Judson Twp.)  I stopped by to see the finished new concrete weir and the drainage ditch running through it.  Things look great and this improvement project is nearing its completion.  Picture to the right of the new concrete weir doing its job.cd34 new weir

Please call with issues you observe on our public drainage system, as there is a lot of open ditch and tile in our county and only two of us in the drainage department.  We will do our absolute best to service your issues and concerns as we receive them.

We require that all repairs to a county drainage system (tile or open ditch) be authorized by one us in the drainage office, either Craig or myself, before any repairs are made.
