NEW (June 29, 2021): The walk-up window now opens at 7:30 AM Monday-Friday for tab renewals and birth certificates.  All other services will remain available at 8 AM. 


For renewal of your car registration, we encourage the use of our drop box located outside door B of the Government Center, 410 S 5th Street, Mankato. You can also now utilize the walk-up window.  Please include your notice, insurance information, payment, and phone number.  Please ensure your driver's license number and phone number are included on your check payment. If using the dropbox, your registration (tabs) will be processed and mailed the next business day.


Register Your Vehicle with or without your Notice


If you have your notice, complete the insurance information, include both halves of the document and payment.  Place all information in the dropbox outside the License Center on 5th Street, Door B, or mail to the License Center at 410 South 5th Street, PO Box 3524, Mankato, MN  56001.  You may also utilize the walk-up window for this service. 


If you do not have your notice, fill out the Registration Form and include it with the rest of your documents in the dropbox outside the main License Center doors or mail it to our office.

  • Keep a portion of your money in your county! The filing fee for vehicle registration renewals is kept in the county if you process your renewal through our office. If you cannot make it into our office, you can mail your vehicle registration to us. 
  • You have 10 days to transfer a motor vehicle.
  • You have 30 days to change your address or name on your driver’s license.
  • You have 60 days after moving to the state to obtain a Minnesota driver’s license and Minnesota license plates
  • License tabs need to be purchased by the last day of the month displayed on your license plate.
  • As of August 1, 2016, there is no longer a 5-day waiting period for most marriage applications. Visit the Marriage Records page for complete details.
  • Insurance information for motor vehicles must be provided at the time of registration per Minnesota State Statute 169.798 Subd. 4, effective January 1, 2016. Proof of insurance includes the insurance company name, policy number and policy expiration date. Vehicle owners will not be allowed to renew their vehicle registration without providing the required information.
